With the Commonwealth Games starting in Glasgow at the end of the month, Scotland is proving a popular location for people who want to stay at home this year and take in the summer of sport. It’s well known that holidays in the UK are popular when the sport is good on the telly. After all, if you just want to watch the action on the big screen, or go along and watch it all happen it’s the perfect place to be, although Scotland is pretty perfect at any time anyway!
If you are intending on heading up over the border for some of the sporting action for Glasgow 2014 then we hope you can fit in a bit of enjoyment of the local area too. There’s plenty to see and do around Scotland, and plenty to slot in between the sporting events this summer! Here are a few suggestions of the best way to make the most of your Scottish holiday.
More Sport
Scotland is the home of golf, a game that has played in the country for six centuries. The Ryder Cup doesn’t take place until September at St Andrews but the golf course, museum and events are plenty to keep the visitors coming.
The Edinburgh Festival
If you fancied extending your break to Scotland, the Edinburgh festival and Glasgow 2014 are running back to back. The Fringe Festival is world famous and a must do for those interesting in arts, theatre and culture.
Visit a Castle
There are plenty of castles to choose from around Scotland, those and stately homes and many of them have been opened up to the public. The most famous Scottish castle is probably Edinburgh but Stirling Castle, Inverness Castle and Dunfermline Palace are all fantastic days out.
Watch a different kind of games
The Commonwealth Games may be taking place in Scotland this summer but the traditional Highland Games. The Games hold events throughout the summer and run through until September so there’s plenty of time to catch up on the action.
With so much to see and do in Scotland your sporting holiday doesn’t have to simply about the Games. Castles, Lochs and more are there to welcome you, not to mention the history, magic, and beautiful scenery the country has to offer.
