Holidaymakers in more than one destination got a real treat this week as dolphins were reported to come further inland than usual in both Cardigan in West Wales, and Cornwall! While bottlenose dolphins can often be seen on boat trips, they are rarely seen by the coastline, but they weren’t feeling shy earlier in the week and ensured they gave British holidaymakers a visit.
In Gwithian, Cornwall, beach goers were given a huge treat, and swimmers got within a few feet of three bottlenose dolphins as they came right into shore. The creatures leapt and pranced in the water, almost inviting swimmers to play while the packed beach looked on.
Eventually, due to their proximity to the shore, and the safety of the dolphins the coastguard was forced to scramble a helicopter, encouraging the dolphins to swim back further out to sea. This story has made many headlines across the country this week as the media chases down feel good stories to go with the sunshine, but Cornwall wasn’t the only place where dolphins were spotted.
Cardigan Bay in West Wales is renowned for sightings of dolphins and pilot whales, and a trip to the area isn’t complete without a boat trip where you are almost guaranteed to spot these majestic creatures. You wouldn’t need a boat this week though as they came right into shore with seven reported sightings off the mainland in a single day this week. The Cardigan Bay Wildlife Centre also reported the sighting of a mother dolphin and her calf at New Quay, Ceredigion this week travelling along the coastline towards Cwmtydu
When most of us think of turquoise, clear seas, white sandy beaches and visits from beautiful marine life we may think of the Seychelles or the Caribbean but both Cornwall and West Wales clearly offer similar experiences!
