A new BBC show is exploring the heyday of the British holiday and is brightening up the television on these wet winter nights with stories of rock pools, ice creams and sandy bays. Holidays of My Lifetime has seen several celebrities taken back to the places of their childhood and asking them to record their memories, the show is well worth a tune in, but have we really had the British holiday heyday?
For the last few years, year on year holiday companies around the UK have been reporting record summers. There’s no doubting that the British holiday has changed, and maybe some buckets and spades have given away to more exciting seaside pastimes, but families are still enjoying, and creating great memories of British holidays every summer!
In the show Ann Widdecombe talks about the Lake District, a place visited often in her childhood. The area remains a popular holiday location today and there’s still plenty of hill walking to be done, something Ms Widdecombe describes as her overriding memory of the place.
The list of places visited in the show is endless, Cornwall, Devon, Essex, but these are all places that still offer great seaside holidays today.
Sometimes it’s tempting to look back fondly on a time that was perceived to be better than today, and surely even today your own children will be creating memories on your own British holidays that will make them think that their childhood was full of sandcastles and ice creams. After all, isn’t that what it’s all about?
While it’s great to look back on times past, it’s important to appreciate what we have too. For instance, draughty caravans are a thing of the past, and these days caravans, lodges and chalets are a home from home experience. Many seaside resorts have also seen huge investment, making it really easy to keep the kids entertained, and with so many parks available, you can have exactly the holiday you want to!
There’s a lot to be said for the traditional seaside holiday, but there’s a lot to be said for choice too so while nostalgia is great, the kind of holidays offered today without needing to go abroad really are wonderful!
