It’s a well known fact that many people plan their holidays around sporting events in the UK, and this year whether you’re visiting Britain or are taking a staycation there are plenty of events happening up and down the country over the summer that you can be part of, or take some time out to enjoy.
Whether you’re waiting patiently for the World Cup 2014 and you’re planning your holiday around that, or whether another sport is your fancy, there are loads of events around the UK and the world this summer, and a bit of careful planning can mean that you get to enjoy them as part of your holiday!

Fifa World Cup 2014 – June 12th to July 13th
It may not be being held in the UK but the Fifa World Cup is the sporting event of the summer and holiday operators are expecting a surge in booking as people take some time off work and plan the holiday around catching up with some serious football action! With so many caravan parks now offering sports bars and the like, it’s just a case of picking the right one.
Henley Regatta – 1st to 6th July
Quintessentially British and celebrating its 175th year this year it doesn’t get much more English than the Henley Regatta. Set in the Oxfordshire countryside, this event is likely to attract locals, holidaymakers and foreign tourists too.
Tour de France – 5th to 7th July
Many people take a holiday to France for this event, but it starts in Yorkshire and travels through the UK before it gets there. On 5th July the Tour gets underway in Leeds, on 6th July you can pick it up in York and by 7th July it’ll be historic Cambridge and onto London before the Tour picks up on the other side of the Channel.
Commonwealth Games – Starts 23rd July
It’s all about Scotland this summer with the Commonwealth Games running for eleven days from 23rd July. With 17 sporting events included and tickets from just £15 each, it’s an unmissable event for any sports’ fan.
Ryder Cup – September
It’s back to Scotland this September for the Ryder Cup, set to take place in the legendary Gleneagles for the first time ever this year and if you’re a golf fan it’s definitely not to be missed! Watch the pros in action and even get a chance to work on your own swing too!
