So you’ve booked the summer holiday, you’ve started filling up the holiday wardrobe and you’re all ready to go. There are a couple of days out planned during your trip, but holidaying is all about having a relaxing time, making some holiday reading totally essential!
Thankfully these days you can even load several books onto your eReader so you don’t even have the ‘books or shoes?’ dilemma of old when you’re packing the case. There are some fantastic new releases out this summer, and lazy days on the beach are a great time to reread some old favourites too, so here’s our rundown of essential holiday reading.
Doctor Sleep – Stephen King
Stephen King believes there is a season for all books and that you shouldn’t ever read books such as IT in the summer on the beach. However we disagree and we think there’s nothing like a good thriller to enthral you as you relax on your holiday. This war between good and evil is promising to be the thriller of the summer.
You’re the One That I Want – Giovanna Fletcher
Chick lit makes great holiday reads and if you’re wanting to get drawn in to someone else’s dramas of the heart this summer then You’re the One That I Want would be our recommendation. The second novel from the author, this is a tale of true love and friendship, starting with Maddy at the altar.
Darwin’s Island: The Galapagos in the Garden of England – Steve Jones
British holidays are often looked down on, so if you’re looking for a reason to feel all sanctimonious about going for an English holiday, this is the book to take with you. Sure to broaden your horizons, and make you feel fantastic about taking a UK break; a perfect non-fiction holiday read.
Footprints in Paris – Gillian Tindall
Whether you’re holidaying in the UK or abroad, this quaint little delve into French history is surely going to take you a million miles away. Books about far flung places are like a holiday on their own and this is promising to be a charming non-fiction read.
The Girl Who Played With Fire – Stieg Larsson
This is sure to be a popular one on the beach loungers this summer, and is the perfect crime thriller. It’s the second in the series following the adventures of the spiky heroine, Lisbeth Salander, a genius computer hacker.
Whatever you pack in the suitcase this summer we just hope you get time to read it all! Summer holidays are perfect for catching up on a bit of beach and poolside reading and for many of us with busy lives it’s the only time we have to get some serious reading done.
