Camping is great fun and if you’re looking for a traditional British camping holiday this summer then we’re promised some beautiful weather, although there is some unsettled rainy weeks forecast too so our first hack would be to check the weather forecast and plan carefully!
If you’re a seasoned camper then you’ll know full well that being organised is the key, but there’s being organised and there’s incorporating some of these amazing camping hacks to make your life even easier!
Pre-scramble eggs – The lifelong issue faced by campers is how to transport eggs, and how to get the egg off everything when they inevitably break. We try and swing past a farm shop on the way to our destination, but pre-scrambling eggs is a fantastic idea. Just whisk up a few eggs at home, transfer into an empty drinks’ bottle and refrigerate. You won’t have to worry about them breaking, and you won’t add an extra bowl or a whisk to the endless camping washing up.
Freeze stuff – Freezing milk, liquids and even pre-cooked meals reduces the need of bulky ice blocks in your cool box. The frozen stuff will take a while to defrost, giving you longer to use it, and will work to keep everything else cool too.
Insect repellents – Insects can be a huge problem when camping but there are ways you can protect yourself. A bundle of sage thrown on the campfire will keep mosquitoes and flying insects away while a solution of tea tree oil (1 part tea tree, 2 parts water) sprayed on the cuffs and socks will detract ticks. If you do get bitten, roll on deodorant makes the perfect bite ease.
Starting the campfire – This can often be the most frustrating part of camping, but often starting the fire successfully can be planned from home before you even go. Keep your cardboard egg cartons and fill the holes with charcoal for an instant fire starter, or take old pieces of fabric to use instead of kitchen towel for greasy soak ups, these can be reused as fire lighters and work surprisingly well!
Let there be light! – Our favourite hack has to be this really simple camping light. Finding enough light in the evenings can be a huge problem and batteries for big torches and lights get expensive, but this fantastic camping light is made simply from an empty bottle filled with water and a battery operated headlamp. The lap offers radiant diffused light and is perfect for camping!
How fantastic is that? It’s the simplest and cleverest thing we’ve ever seen, we hope you’re as amazed as we are!
