Top 10 British Travel Destinations Revealed

British Holidays, or staycations as they’re often known, are increasing in popularity every single year. Whether you’re camping, staying at a resort in a holiday home, or booking into a hotel for a few days, going away but staying at home is a popular holiday choice and now Travelodge has revealed the results of a survey, naming the top 10 staycation locations in the UK.

With so many beautiful towns and cities, mountains and hundreds of miles of coastland, you could never tire of our shores but we all want different things from a holiday. That makes the top 10 British travel destinations a mixed back of cities and hamlets, from bustling shopping streets to tranquillity abound, and that top 10 may be worth a look if you’re considering a UK holiday this summer.

Here is that top 10, with 3,000 holidaymakers polled for the final result:

  1. London – Maybe it’s unsurprising that London came out top as the most visited city in the UK, it really has everything you could want if you’re looking to take in some shows, museums, or just enjoy the shopping.
  2. Cornwall – The jewel in the coastal crown of the UK has to be Cornwall with quaint seaside towns, rugged coves, and all the ingredients of a perfect seaside holiday. – Holidays in Cornwall
  3. Edinburgh – With one of the biggest castles in Britain, a bustling town centre and a heritage steeped in tradition, Edinburgh offers a fair mix for the staycationer and is therefore hugely popular.
  4. Scottish Highlands – If you want to find yourself by first losing yourself there’s not much better place to do it than the Scottish Highlands. The remoteness of it all is other-worldly making it the perfect destination for those wanting to stay in the UK. – Holidays in Scotland
  5. Lake District – The Lakes in North-West England is probably the most well-known travel destination in the UK and is hugely popular with tourists, especially British holidaymakers. It’s not too far away from everything else, but offers stunning vistas and some of the most peaceful surroundings around.
  6. Devon – Beautiful Devon with it’s beautiful coastlines and seaside towns offers the picture perfect British holiday people think of when they think of the UK. Sold around the world as an image of our nation, Devon is much visited destination for UK tourists. – Holidays in Devon

North Wales – Wales is a beautiful country but we assume it’s Snowdon and the coastal towns that draw people to the North, not to mention how accessible it is from Liverpool, Manchester and other surrounding North West English towns. Snowdonia National Park is like another world, and you really couldn’t be further away from it all, yet staying at home.
  8. York – The historic town of York is a beautiful city break destination, especially for those with an interest in history. York Minster and the Shambles are a must for your visit, but there’s plenty to see and do for the most busy holidaymaker.
  9. Blackpool – The seaside, the illuminations and a great huge funfair make Blackpool the glittery attraction that it is. The destination is massively popular both with families and groups looking for some fun.
  10. Brighton – Brighton Beach features in virtually every ‘sunny day’ article that appears in every national newspaper so maybe it should come as no surprise that Brighton made the top 10 UK destinations here. A lovely beach and a vibrant outlook make Brighton popular with younger tourists and families.

So there they are, the top 10 holiday destinations according to Travelodge, who also noted some other interesting UK facts along the way too! While we save and use up a fortnight for a foreign holiday, staycationers are more likely to take several breaks in a year, breaking up their holiday time. In fact, one in ten UK holidaymakers takes more than four breaks a year, and that has to sound appealing!
