All your friends are jetting off for their summer holidays, but you for one reason or another are still trying to organise a break. With passports and arrangements it’s probably too late to head off to tropical climes but don’t worry as there are plenty of reasons to stay at home!
British holidays are becoming increasingly popular and there are plenty of reasons why, here are 9 to get you started!
The Food
Trying to get kids to eat foreign food can be as difficult as getting them to eat beetles, and in some parts of the world the two things might be one and the same. Seaside holidays are a sanctuary of fried food, takeaways and reliable British fare, the kids love it and let’s be honest, so do you.
The Language
Yes I know, you dreamed of taking little Timothy on trips to the French Riveria where he’d learn the language in an instant and have a lifelong friendship with Pierre from Provence, but it never happens like that. What you actually get is a bored kid who makes no friends and spends the whole holiday driving you mad, which is why British holidays are great for holiday friendships, for children and adults alike!
The Beach
You won’t find any snotty private beaches in the UK, they’re all public and they’re appealing all year around. There’s no boring expanse of white sand either, or idyllic palm trees, which is probably a good job because the children prefer rockpools, coves, pebbly beaches and crabs and that’s exactly what you get with a good old British seaside holiday! What’s more, there’s no worrying about poisonous jellyfish, sharks or any of the other frightening beasties in warmer shores.
Less Stress
A recent survey showed that most people’s most negative holiday memory was at the airport, and let’s be fair it’s a stressful place to be. It’s said it takes half the week to undo the stress of air travel, and that’s plenty of reason to grab some relaxation on your own doorstep.
The Bank Balance
Foreign holidays are a massive expense that take most people the best part of a year to save for. If working 51 weeks a year to have a week in the sun isn’t your idea of fun then you’ll be heartened to hear that those who holiday in the UK tend to take several breaks a year, and the budget is the key there with British holidays being much more affordable!
The Weather
What’s the word we’re looking for? Ah, diverse! No really, it’s not as bad as they say and we rarely get extreme weather on either end of the scale making it the perfect location for activity breaks and action holidays. Plus, sun screen is really expensive, so back to the budget point of the last post!
History
They say in America 200 years is a long time while in the UK 200 miles is a long way. The UK has some of the most diverse and richest history in the world and its crammed with museums attempting to preserve it. With many historic towns and many free entry museums around the UK it’s easy to take in a bit of culture during your holiday.
That 200 Miles Thing
Yeah, nothing is really ever that far away in the UK, it’s 603 miles from tip to tip, which theoretically means that nothing is more than a few hours away. It sounds a long way when you’re British but throw 600 miles on a map of America and see how far you could get!
You Can Take The Dogs
A recent survey by the Blue Cross put pets as the main reason many choose British holidays and with so many pet-friendly holiday parks around the UK it’s never been easier to include the four-legged members of the family in your plans. Not to mention saving the expense of kenneling your pet, especially important these days when kennels have started setting prices in line with the Hilton Group.
