If you’re in work and memories of your summer holiday already feel distant then you may be feeling a little hard done by, and we’re fairly sure that the news that British workers get fewer holidays isn’t going to make you feel any better. It can often feel like you’re chained to your desk and according to recent figures, there’s a good reason for that.
Financial services Mercer has worked out that UK workers get fewer public holidays than almost everywhere in the world, the second lowest of all public holiday entitlement. So if you were thinking there’s never enough long weekends to get away on a short break, then that’s the reason why!
Public holidays to change year on year depending on events in the country but workers in India and Columbia provide the greatest number of days public holiday, while the UK beats only Mexico, providing 8 days for Mexico’s 7.
No wonder we all feel so worn out all the time, and for those who enjoy short breaks in the UK, those extra holiday days could really add up to plenty of long weekends away. Workers in the Netherlands and Hungary also miss out as like us they receive 8 days each, while those in Serbia receive 9.
Statutory allowances are often the only way of grabbing extra days off throughout the year and an extra day can make a long weekend, and anyone who’s done a short break anywhere in the UK knows that a long weekend can turn into a big relaxing holiday if planned right.
We often hear of campaigns to make various days Bank Holidays, we might just get behind the next one!
