Caravans at Christmas – Why Not?

Caravan in the snow

As Christmas comes up, the idea is that we’re all supposed to focus on home, where there’s a perfectly dressed tree, a roaring fire and a traditional family unit in place to enjoy it all. But news this week confirms that more and more people – for whatever reason – are taking the opportunity to get away from home for Yuletide.

The Camping and Caravanning Club has just announced that 30 of its sites will be open this Christmas, with many of them offering entertainment and events to make the Christmas caravanner extra welcome.

Sites Director for the Camping and Caravanning Club, Bob Hill, said: “More of our sites are open over the Christmas and New Year period than ever before, driven by the demands of both members and non-members of the Club.

“Campers have discovered that winter camping is comfortable, enjoyable and presents great value. Club reinvestment in the sites network totalling £4.8 million in the 2014/15 winter season has allowed for improvements to many on-site facilities.”

There are plenty of good reasons for going away at Christmas. Many of them will be demographic – there are now more older people, more single people, and fewer traditional families in the UK.

For many people, a special time means a change of scenery. Groups and families can get together without worrying about who’s the host when you pick an entirely new venue. And, most Christmas breaks come with lots of extras in terms of entertainments, and the chance to meet new people.

Of course, a Christmas caravan break has the same advantages that apply to caravanning all year round. It’s great value. The caravanning crowd are fun and welcoming. It’s more comfortable than camping and more liberating than bricks-and-mortar accommodation.

On a purely practical note, this year Christmas falls on a Friday, making longer breaks better value and more practical.

It’s still not too late to make your Christmas a magical caravan Christmas this year.

Park Resorts are offering special breaks at their Lake District parks, with special offers on five and 6 night stays. They also have New Year breaks.

Hoseasons are doing special offers in some of their lodges for Christmas breaks.

Shorefield are pulling out all the stops at two parks, Shorefield Country Park and Oakdene Forest Park, with hospitality, food and children’s entertainment. They’ve also got plenty of entertainment lined up for New Year at both parks.

But choice is what caravanning is all about, and if the perfect Christmas for you is spending time quietly on your own or enjoying some walks in Britain’s unrivalled countryside then that’s an option that’s available at parks all over the country – from to

And, if you’ve got caravanners in the family, you can make their Christmas special wherever they are, with Christmas vouchers from as little as £5 from Park Holidays.
